Precision Machinist Corporation (PREMACOR)

Everybody loves a success story. But few stories touch the heart of ordinary men as much as the story of Jose Morales.

How he built one of the finest precision engineering companies in Cebu is truly an inspiring narrative for every underprivileged soul who dreams big.

Born to destitution, life was lined with adversities for the young Morales.
He was forced to earn a living while studying in the city, taking whatever odd jobs he could find, to augment the meager family income.

The obstacles he had to face for several years would have broken the spirit of men made of weaker stuff. But life’s trials only made Morales more determined to overcome his poverty.

What made Jose Morales different from any cash strapped teenager was his unwavering belief that he would one day be financially independent. He also knew that knowledge was the key to reaching his goal.

After graduating from a metalworking course, Morales worked at an engineering and research company for nine years until he realized that he would be better-off managing his own business.

In 1980, armed with a few thousand pesos, he established the Precision Machinist Corporation (PREMACOR). He set-up his service shop in a small run-down house and serviced the machine parts needs of beverage, shipping and mining industries in Cebu for a few years.

PREMACOR was later incorporated in 1984 to become a high precision machine parts manufacturer that would service local and overseas customers.

He later acquired a foreign scholarship through the assistance of the Department of Trade and Industry Cebu Provincial Office. This immersed him for a year in a German factory and opened his eyes to future possibilities for his company.

German technology fascinated him. In the hands of German trainers, he developed a voracious appetite for knowledge on the latest trends in precision engineering.

Working at a foreign manufacturing plant provided him with hands-on knowledge on modern machineries to increase work productivity and allowed him to see the advantages in adopting a mindset attuned to market needs.

His later experiences working with Japanese clients molded him to be more flexible and quickly adjust to change. Sometime in 1987,

PREMACOR started servicing companies at the Mactan Economic Zone (MEZ). Today a huge share of PREMACOR revenues comes from servicing these companies.

Unlike most local suppliers, the high and exacting standards of MEZ companies never daunted Morales. Although in the beginning, he had to deal with several product rejects, he knew that MEZ companies were willing to teach him what he needed to learn.

A hands-on manager, he had no qualms about learning new things even at his age. In fact, Morales believes his company thrives on its openness to change, constant improvement and modern work methods.

Through the years, PREMACOR acquired the capability and know-how necessary to produce metal components within 5 micron accuracy, from ordinary heat treated tool steel or ferrotic to the most difficult to cut tungsten carbide.

Today, the company manufactures high-precision Plastic Injection Moulds, Vacuum Forming Moulds, Stamping Dies and Semicon Tooling Components. It operates a well-equipped air conditioned tool room.

Its workshop is stocked with the latest model, high-grade machinery made by some of the world’s best-known manufacturers, a number of which are capable of achieving single digit tolerances.

PREMACOR is now ISO certified, meaning that the company is up to par with international standards.

With its reputation for quality products and service, the company currently gets a lot of attention from foreign companies.

Recently, a foreign firm is planning to tie up with his company to service Asia.Jose Morales has not only achieved financial independence but also respect from international manufacturing firms.

Despite his success, he still remembers his beginnings and has a soft spot for the underprivileged members of society. He is presently employing metalworking graduates from Don Bosco Technical School and Center for Industrial Technology and Enterprise (CITE), making his factory a sort of finishing school for these young people before they leave for better opportunities outside the country.

Now enjoying financial stability, he advises Filipino families to embrace entrepreneurship as a means to improve their economic status. He believes that entrepreneurship is the answer to poverty alleviation and should be inculcated at a young age.

Starting a business does not entail a lot of money as proven by Jose Morales. A person only needs to specialize in a small area of the industry and make money out of it.

Morales showed that as soon as an entrepreneur makes a name for himself by providing a track record for good quality products and excellent service, he will attract bigger clients.

Not only has Morales proven that anyone can overcome poverty through entrepreneurship, but that supplying the needs of companies in Cebu’s economic zones is good business.

all what is written here contradicts to what is really happening.. this company doesn't treasure their workers.. imagine those pioneering workers who worked for about 20+ years.. yet their rate is still below 400.. ohh common.. they should give what the pioneers deserve

Im proud to be part of the company's success. i've worked there for several years and taught me a lot of things. only problem is the management doesnt know how to value their assests. that's the reason why a lot of good if not the best worker's are leaving for the same reason that i have, and im pretty sure there's still alot to follow.

most of the comments (above) are from people who were discontented with the benefit they received from premacor, its true that premacor is growing and has boost its income from the past "but" premacor'a average monthly income is striving to sustain financially, let your math do the work.... imagine a employee of 100 workers with 20+ pioneers with 400 peso it would give an average of 300000 pesos.. and that's only for the people he/she said excluding some 70+ employees who's income is 200+/day... excluding taxes.. benefits.... expenses from daily needs water..electricity..etc..

the comments above are 1 sided selfish act of ..... (remember who ever you are that premacor helped you and you helped premacor which is a good thing to consider that your part of the success..) maybe not financially but pride and dignity)..

we pledge to a company to "work" and dedicate our lives to this but don't take it too mindlessly that you get what you want because you aren't the only person working hard.

the only thing that these people are posting negative things is that they are financially discontented.. (you want millions go make your own company.) and lets see if you hear what you are saying here. "listen to yourselves"

i do believed that premacor is one if the best machine shops here in cebu, but the only downside about this company is the way they evaluate their employee. here an example:
1.) PREMACOR MBR - Jig Board Leader he earns 12k a month, with a especial skill " a loud mouth ", let him do jigboard work or assemble a masterboard & compared it to PREMACOR'S main Jigboard Leader, well most of Lear Engg, other suppliers employee knew this that this guy compared to that guy is like comparing a Machining Center vs a conventional Milling, my god.
2.) This guy is not even a Degree Holder/ Techie Person.
3.) Some says this guy Overtimed doing nothing, walk..walk..talk..walk. "big mouth"
4.) Compared this guy with X employees. who is more productive? who has skills to do the job right? who works with the mouth?

agreed. Your statement was exactly why i leaved the company, after knowing it oh my god. how did they evaluate that? is he more productive than me? does he follow company rules and policies than me? is he smarter than me?.. did he help the company? didn't i?

i worked here myself and it is very sad that people who should be given credit are not given what is due to them. i am not merely a ditractor, i am saying this because people have to know the truth. i agree with the one who commented that mr. morales had nothing to start with. although he worked hard to build this company, without the financial help he is nothing. does he ever look back on where he came from?

Yes, I am one of the proud employee of Premacor, this company taught me a lot of knowledge and skills, I should say that from being an ordinary personnel and now in the middle management position, I owe this from Premacor(Mr. Morales).
On the negative comments above, I believe it is one sided, maybe you are not doing well on your job thats why your Immediate Head did not recommend you for salary increase. On the other hand for Immediate Head it is your job to evaluate objectively your subordinates, do it. It is not a job of the President to evaluate all the employees of Premacor, imagine there are almost 200 employees, and you let Mr. Morales evaluate you...think of it.....

I used to worked in this company. I thank mr.morales for the opportunity that he gave me.it was a nice experience working with them.yes my salary was not that big .it was below minimum. But it was enough for my daily needs because i know how to budget wisely.Mr. Morales is a great person. A very hard working and very intellegent person. He knows how to look back where he came from. I also would like to thank mr. Peralta his partner. Who have been very nice to me since my first day til my last day of my work. He was like the counselor of the company. For those with negative comments about the company. If you dont like the way they are running their company and if you cant stand their way. Just leave and get another job. Thats how it is. Follow me. I left and find another job.Stop the bitterness. Be thankful because we become part of premacor and we learned something from them.

Arguably Joe Morales is a very honest technocrat he was one of my favorite technical mentor. Right from the get-go i considered him to be among the elite rennaisance of Don Bosco's bests. The MAN will never cheat anyone nor ignore help according to the
standards of business management in accordance with current financial trend to keep the shop afloat at all cost. Mr. Morales wont ever cheat nor short-change anybody. His untarnished honesty made him one of the model prodigy in the machine shop industry.Trust me Mr Jose Morales is very straight forward with everyone.
He is running a well managed business and not a charity corporation. MORE power to you Mr. Joe. Also he is a very religious man, our devine mentor St. John Bosco always preached "the family that prays together stays together" so stay with Sir Joe and dont 'broke' him. If not my prayers and wish you the best for next endeavor.
